Plenty of drivers choose to get all-season tyres which will get them through the year. However, others may prefer to switch between summer and winter tyres. You may be unsure why this happens if you don’t know much about the difference between each type of tyre. We’re going to explain a little about what they are and why they’re used to help you make an informed decision.
What Winter Tyres Are
Winter tyres are developed with thicker tread patterns. This gives your car a lot more grip, so it’s safer to drive in icy conditions. There are also more grooves, so the car will grip to wet and snowy ground too. The grooves expel moisture away from the tyre, so there’s a much lower chance of losing traction and getting stuck.
Winter tyres are able to withstand colder temperatures without becoming brittle, leading to better responsiveness and improved driving. On the flip side, if you choose to use winter tyres in the summer, you can expect the rubber to soften in the higher temperatures and therefore reduce in performance.
What Summer Tyres Are
Summer tyres have less tread than winter tyres do. They’re made of a harder rubber which won’t soften too much, even in high temperatures. There’s enough grooves to expel water during rainy weather, but not so many that it will decrease performance. Summer tyres perform well in temperatures above 7 degrees Celsius.
All-Season Tyres
All-season tyres are a happy medium between summer and winter tyres. They are made of a medium-soft rubber and have a thick tread with enough grooves to perform well in lower temperatures. These tyres are only recommended for those who very rarely need to drive in temperatures that are below 0 degrees Celsius. Most of our customers in Rugeley will be fine with this type of tyre. However, if you take regular trips to colder climates you may wish to rotate between summer and winter tyres.
